What Golf Shirt Features Are Popular?

Golf shirts have become a fashion trend over the past decade or so. They have reached all walks of society and the elite, as well as the common man, everywhere. Many top golf players such as Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods wear golf shirts when playing.

A golf shirt is a type of shirt with either a short or long collar, a square neckline, two to three buttons, and a pocket. Polo shirts were originally short-sleeved; they later became popular by polo players in India in the late 1800s and by British players in the twenty-first century. Their popularity has soared due to their ability to provide maximum comfort and breathability for golfers, while also providing optimal coverage of the body. The fabric used in making golf shirts may be nylon, cotton, polyester, rayon, or a blend of any of these materials, depending on the manufacturer. Popular synthetic blends are corduroy and bamboo viscose.

Both nylon and cotton make for comfortable golf shirts, but only cotton can keep the body cool in hot weather and stay dry in damp climates. In addition, it dries quickly, while synthetics tend to wick moisture away from the body. Polyester blends are known to wick moisture away from the body and are very breathable. However, these fabrics do not hold in moisture very long, thus making them ineffective for golf shirts made of polyester. A cotton shirt will also absorb too much stretch.

Although not originally developed for use by golfers, many sizes of polo shirts have been manufactured for men and women, in both long and short sleeve styles. Long sleeve golf shirts usually have collars that reach up to the neckline, while short sleeves reach just above the elbow. These shirts are usually made with cotton or a cotton/polyester blend but are also available in many sizes, as well as polo shirts with many sizes of buttons and zipper allowances. Many companies produce both short and long sleeve styles of this type of apparel.

Golf shirts fit the following four different types of body type: athletic, slender, average, and heavy. Athletic body types tend to fit the athletic fit style of golf shirts, while slender and average body types typically prefer the looser fit. Heavy people usually prefer the heavyweight fit. Because of the way the fit is constructed, athletic golf shirts tend to be more tight around the torso, while athletic styles tend to be looser in the chest area.

Golf shirts are usually made with two different shapes of pockets, one on each inner and outer layer. The inner layer usually features two to three pockets, which provide holders for various golf accessories. The outer layer usually features one pocket, which generally accommodates an MP3 player, cell phone, or another small accessory. The outer layer can also be lined with another fabric, such as tweed. Some golf shirts feature extra detailing on the pockets, such as snap-on buckles, zippers, or embroidery.
