The Best Shirts for Men

The Basics of Men’s Shirts. For many men the basics of men’s shirt are usually based around the materials they are made out of, the different styles of collars, sleeves, and neck style. This article will only cover the main categories of collars and sleeves in a typical shirt. Short-Sleeved Shirts. These are typically just sleeveless except with a cowl neck, which creates that V-shaped silhouette we’ve all become accustomed to seeing in movies or on TV.

Cuffed Shirts. We all have seen these shirts all over the place from the movie Office Space to a commercial for Old Spice. Cuffed shirts for men are another staple casual wardrobe piece. These shirts provide an extra layer of warmth against the cold and/or dry air. They are also very convenient because they are so widely used. You can take them with you whether you’re going out for dinner or to the office.

Unsolicited Pants. “Unsolicited” is not really technically correct, but this category falls under shirts for men that are specifically worn by the wearer. They can be worn as everyday wear or they can be paired with a blazer or sports jacket for that edgy look. For example, if you were going to a concert and you happened to bring along your golf shirt, you wouldn’t say “erm-a-tude” but would instead say something like “I’m bringing my golf shirt.” These are called unsolicited pants and have been around since the start of time (i.e., they predate the suit).

Long Sleeve Men Shirts for Guys. The classic long sleeve shirt is a staple of every man’s closet. There is nothing more quintessential than a quality t-shirt with a comfortable fit and a good length. However, the most classic fabric toppers (not to mention, most versatile fabrics) are the cotton, linen, wool and silk fabrics.

Traditional Polo Shirts. There are many different types of men’s polo shirts that come in various styles and materials. In terms of fabric, there are four main categories: percale cotton, seersucker, cotton blended, and guayabera. There are also several classic top shirt styles: crew, V-neck, golf, short sleeve and regular.

Dress Shirt and Pants combinations. If you want to be dressed up or dressed down, it doesn’t matter what type of clothes you are wearing, you can either wear a dress shirt paired with a pair of slacks or pants, or a pair of jeans and a dress shirt. This is just one section of the ever-expanding men’s wardrobe, so feel free to learn more about other fabrics, materials and shirt styles such as: cable knit, velvet, distressed, crochet, cashmere, and Georgette.
